NIEDS HOTEL

“An imaginary place that actually exists.”

nieds_id.jpg

In 1941 Paul Nied, entrepreneur, father, and husband bought a small yet charming old brick building on Butler Street, in a section of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania known as Lawrenceville. It was, as it is today, known as Nied’s Hotel.

Nied’s Hotel is not about brick and mortar, it’s not about great food, or Pittsburgh’s own … Iron City Beer. No, Nied’s Hotel is about people, real people with real lives and real problems. From the crusty old wisdom of resident steel workers to the sophisticated masks of local financers … Nied’s Hotel welcomes them all as individuals with one spirit of community. Ya see, once you enter Nied’s Hotel and settle up to the bar, your place in society established by others is no longer relevant.

The Nied’s Hotel makes the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Best of 2008 Munchies!!

Best place to kick it old school, Pittsburgh-style: Nied’s Hotel, Lawrenceville.

Simple formula: Icy cold Iron City + ginormously awesome fried fish sandwiches + an 89-year-old bartender whose forgotten more good stories than you’ll ever know = Nied’s Hotel on Butler Street, perhaps the most perfect neighborhood bar in a city full of ‘em. Call 412-781-9853.

Maybe the lyrics from the Nied’s Hotel song will provide an understanding of what Nied’s Hotel is all about:

Nied’s Hotel MP3

Let me paint a picture of a place called Nied’s
1941 Pope Paul sowed the seeds
Came a son named Jimmy, did the best he can
That little boy grew into a helluva man

Can’t seem to drink anywhere else in town
Charlie sets em up, Schmitty knocks em down
Say you’re kinda hungry, well your luck’s just right
Get your famous fish sandwich from
Nied’s Hotel tonight

Wowee Maloney really could paint
No one runs a grill like old Slickville Dave
Roy Kawolski’s tickets are fraud
Theresa and Nancy, classy broads

A cop named Leslie
Don Devinny too
Lady Di and Mi Mi, Jo Murry have a few
Tonight at Ceasar’s Palace, Lenny makes ‘em laugh

Drunkin’ “Krenn Heads” scream real loud
The Rat sure got the shaft

Hanging out on a Monday night

It’s Dash and his bowling buddies
Kenny Brunsell broke his leg
Trying to dance real funny

When Mike the bartender serves her twelve
Maggie turns to Cybil
Lovable Len, the working mans friend
Says “Packy’s really in trouble, again”
It’s called creative family planning

The Animal caught a real bad break
But we know he’ll be all right
Standing tall with all our hope and faith
He’ll make it through another day

We all will pray Steve will be ok

Johnny V. and Herky playing pool
Barbie and Amy always dealing with them fools
You know those old Ford Brothers are so loud
Wild Miss Kitty, always drinking proud

Jimmy’s got two kids of his own today
Two handsome boys, Ronnie and P.J.
Say your kind of thirsty, well your luck’s just right
Get your Iron City beer from Nied’s Hotel tonight
